A Guide to Japanese "Men's Este" Salons for International Visitors

Driven by the recent surge in inbound tourism, an increasing number of "Men's Este" (men's esthetic) salons in Japan are now welcoming international clients.
Did you know that Japanese men's este, where you can experience Japan's unique "Omotenashi" (culture of hospitality), is gaining popularity not just domestically but also overseas? Today, we explore the charm of men's este salons that are open to foreigners.

What is "Men's Este"?

"Men's Este" refers to establishments that provide relaxation-focused massages for men. These salons are generally categorized into three types:
"Store-front (Room) type": Salons with a physical shop.
"Apartment type": Salons operating in a single apartment unit.
"Dispatch (Outcall) type": Services that visit your location, such as a hotel.
The foundation of men's este is "oil massage" using aromatic oils, which provides a thorough massage of the entire body, including legs, arms, and back.
Additionally, the overwhelmingly popular "deep lymph massage" is a sought-after treatment that focuses on massaging the sokeibu (groin area) at the base of the legs. Because the treatment involves areas close to private parts, it offers a thrilling, borderline sensation not found in typical massages.
A key appeal of men's este is the chance to enjoy a deeply relaxing service as a beautiful Japanese female therapist provides a comfortable massage while engaging in pleasant conversation.

Men's Este is NOT a Sexual Service

Men's este salons are not "fuzoku" (sex work establishments), and no sexual services are performed during the massage. While sex work establishments include sexual services, men's este salons are strictly prohibited by law from providing any sexual services whatsoever. Even during the deep lymph massage focusing on the groin area, there is no service that involves directly touching the client's genitals. Men's este is purely for relaxation purposes. Please be aware that you must not request or demand sexual services from the female therapists.

Men's Este Salons Available to Foreigners

While most men's este salons in Japan primarily cater to Japanese men, some establishments welcome foreign clients, allowing them to easily experience Japan's men's este services. Areas with high numbers of foreign tourists, such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, have many salons available to foreigners. Be sure to check the salon's website beforehand to confirm if they accept international clients.

How to Enjoy Men's Esten

With the growth of inbound tourism, more and more tourists are using men's este, a culture that doesn't typically exist in other countries. So, how can you receive a heartfelt massage from a female therapist? Here, we introduce the basic steps to enjoy men's este in Japan. If you have the chance to visit Japan, we highly recommend experiencing the incredible healing effects of a men's este massage.

STEP 1. Make a Reservation

STEP 1. Make a Reservation

To enjoy men's este in Japan, you must first make a reservation. Most men's este salons are strictly by appointment only. It is not acceptable to visit a salon without a reservation.
Even at salons listed as "Foreigner OK," it is crucial to contact the shop in advance to confirm. You can make a reservation via the salon's website ("Online Reservation"), "LINE Reservation," or "Phone Reservation." If you are not confident in your Japanese, using a translation app to inquire via LINE is a good option.

You can make a reservation by providing the following information:
Confirming if they accept foreign clients.
Your desired date and time.
Your desired course and therapist.
For apartment-type salons, you will receive information about the room location after the reservation is complete. For outcall types, foreign tourists will most likely be visited at their hotel. Please note that dispatch to shared rooms, such as in hostels, is not possible.

STEP 2. Arrival

STEP 2. Arrival

Once your reservation is complete, we recommend arriving 5 minutes before your scheduled time. A key point to note is: do not enter the room or ring the bell earlier than your reservation time, even if you arrive early. The therapist is busy preparing to welcome you.

If you arrive early and wish to start sooner, contact the reception desk to let them know. In some cases, you may be allowed to enter the room early.

Payment at Japanese men's este salons is almost always required in advance. Payment methods vary; some shops accept "cash only," while others accept "credit cards." Check the website beforehand.

STEP 3. Conversation

STEP 3. Conversation

When you meet the female therapist, start with a brief conversation. This helps break the ice for both of you, allowing you to receive the treatment in a more relaxed state. Some salons may have you fill out a counseling sheet at this time, where you can specify areas you would like the massage to focus on.

STEP 4. Shower

STEP 4. Shower

At a men's este salon, you will be guided to the shower room before the treatment. The treatment begins after you have showered and cleaned your body. The shower time is included in your course time. It is basic etiquette to wash your body thoroughly.

STEP 5. Treatment Start

STEP 5. Treatment Start

After showering, you will change into paper shorts, and the treatment will begin. Enjoy the full-body massage while also enjoying conversation with the therapist.

Warning: It is strictly forbidden to touch the therapist during the treatment. The rule of men's este is to passively receive and enjoy the massage.
